Only a few landmarks are familiar to the young Lebanese. But of older generations Beirut's City center, however much it was destroyed during the war, holds a wealth of place associations. Well known meeting points including the celebrated Al-Ajami restaurant, Patisserie Suisse and Tanios at Bab Idris, where many sought refuge from the city's hubbub, or the Intabli "fountain" in Souk Ayaass, where shoppers paused for a glass of lemonade or jallab. These many remembered places, however small, still carry identity and meaning. A great number of these places still live on by their names. |
